Space Pirate manages gold twice in one week

MB&F’s extraordinary HM6 aka the Space Pirate has been given a precious metal update after winning one of one of the top prizes at an international design awards.

The Swiss haute horlogerie watch maker collected a ‘Best of the Best’ prize from the Red Dot gala ceremony in Essen, Germany, earlier this week for the HM6 watch, one of only 81 products to take home the award from more than 5,000 submissions.

Now the watch gets an 18-piece 18ct red gold update, following the initial release of 50 pieces in titanium last year. The entire HM6 collection is to be limited to 100 movements in total meaning that MB&F will only release another 32 pieces, in whatever guise they decide. The case is milled from a single block of 18ct red gold.

MB&F selected a special 18ct gold alloy, 5N+, ahead of the more commonly used red gold 5N tone. The alloy uses a small amount of palladium alongside the usual gold and copper, which ‘fixes’ the copper and prevents oxidisation and tarnishing.
