Raymond Weil pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix set at Woodstock

50 years after guitar legend lit up seminal music festival, a special edition Freelancer watch has been made in his honour.

Independent Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil is using this year’s 50th anniversary of Woodstock to honour one of the festival’s most iconic artists, Jimi Hendrix, with a limited edition Freelancer watch.

It is the latest in a series of watches associated with classic musicians that has included tribute pieces for The Beatles, Buddy Holly, David Bowie, AC/DC and Bob Marley.

Raymond Weil has used design elements from Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 white Fender Stratocaster electric guitar to illustrate the dial of the £2,795 Freelancer watch including the use of nine dotted index markers that mimic the frets on his guitar neck and circular border representing the six guitar strings.

Hendrix was known for his signature left-handed guitar technique, visible in the Fender guitar counter weight design of the second hand.

He wore an unforgettable cyan blue ensemble with an Aztec guitar strap on the Woodstock stage; the colour is prominently accented on the second and sub-dial hands while the embossed design on the watch face calls attention to the Aztec pattern.

The tachymeter ring has with the singer’s famous quote, “Music is my Religion” alongside his name, and the caseback is finished with the authentic Hendrix logo, that can only be used with the permission of the musician’s estate.
