A British auction taking place next week is headlined with a rare Rolex Submariner ‘369’ Explorer dial gentleman’s wristwatch dating from 1962 that is expected to sell for around £200,000.

It is the third Rolex Submariner with the 369 dial (where only the hours of 3, 6 and 9 appear).

Previous sales have achieved £192,000 and £210,000.

The watch being sold by Gardiner Houlgate at its two day live and online auction on October 20 and 21 is from a private collector and has not been seen for 25 years.

Gardiner Houlgate appears to have cornered the auction market in Rolex Submariners with the 369 dial configuration, with ten different examples selling in excess of £1 million over recent times.

The auction lot is described as “a Very fine and extremely rare Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner stainless steel gentleman’s wristwatch with the 3-6-9 Explorer dial and pointed crown guard case, ref. 5512/5513, circa 1962, serial no. 765xxx, gloss black ‘Swiss’ dial with small minute markers, hour baton markers, quarter 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, gilt and silvered dial printing ‘Rolex Oyster Perpetual 200m=660ft Submariner’, Mercedes hands with sweep centre seconds, Oyster case with revolving black calibrated bezel insert, pointed crown guards with screw-down crown, calibre 1530 26 jewel movement, no. 28xxx, the inside case back stamped ‘5512’ and dated ‘1.62’ with service inscription date ‘1989’, Rolex Oyster USA rivetted bracelet, stamped ’77’, case, dial and movement signed, bezel diameter 40mm.”
