Rado gets innovative with plasma treated cases

Rado has revealed four new watches in its D-Star collection, made in high-tech black ceramic and with a platinum-coloured finish.

This mini D-Star collection has been dubbed "ultra-suave" by the brand, with cases that nod to retro styling with their softer shape and choice of bracelet or crocodile style leather straps.

The range incorporates a specially developed movement, with an extended 60 hour power reserve, while three of the four watches have cases coated with a plasma treatment that gives the watches a metallic, platinum coloured brilliance, without the use the metal.

The plasma process is patented and exclusive to Rado, with the ceramic surface altered by gases that are heat activated at 20,000 degrees, without affecting its essential properties. The surface colour of the ceramic is changed to the platinum colour, a treatment that the brand says will not fade over time, instead retaining the ceramic’s naturally scratch-resistant shine for several years.

The brand has described the leather strapped model as "a uniquely dapper style suited to a gentleman about town", while the black high-tech ceramic has a sportier touch.
