Porsche eyes pole position in premium watch segment

Porsche Design Timepieces is hoping its participation at Baselworld will kick-start its growth plans after exhibiting with its own booth at the show for the very first time.

It decision to exhibit solo comes a year after the foundation of the business and, according to CEO Dr. Christian Kurtzke, the company is delighted to be dining at the watchmaking top table.

“There are many established companies that have positioned themselves successfully in the watch industry with technical complications or a sporty image,” he said. “However, we see clear opportunities for a strong designer brand in the premium timepiece segment for men. That is precisely where we will position Porsche Design in the future – with the right mix of sporty elegance, function, technological innovation, and last but not least with an attractive price-quality ratio.

This week Porsche Design has been showcasing the collections that it insists will open a new chapter in the company’s timepiece history.

Although the firm has only been designing in-house since last year, Kurtzk pointed out that the brand is not starting from scratch because it has more than 40 years of timepiece history that it can build on.

Collections on show at Baselworld include the new 1919 Datetimer Eternity, which is inspired by the puristic clear lines and the functional aesthetics of the legendary Porsche 356, and the 1919 Eternity Black Edition, featuring a minimalistic dial design that focuses the eye on the essentials of time and date. The latest designs, which also include the 1919 Chronotimer, are a reference to the company’s iconic heritage.

All timepieces from the 1919 Collection are developed by the company’s Swiss subsidiary in close cooperation with Design Studio in Zell am See, Austria.

The latest models will be available in Porsche Design stores around the world as well as at select watch retailers in May.
