Police and SaferGems to talk crime at LWS seminar

Fraud, the rise in smash and grabs, identifying stolen watches and the SaferGems organisation will be among the subjects discussed by police Flying Squad members and SaferGems representatives on July 3 at 1pm.

The talk will be taking place at the London Watch Show at Freemasons’ Hall next week and will be hosted by Flying Squad members Simon Cham, Tony Blake and Jim Egley alongside Lee Henderson and Simon Gardener from SaferGems, which is the National Association of Goldsmiths’ organisation that helps to raise awareness of jewellery crimes in the UK to aid the bringing of criminals to trial and increase communication among jewellers and the various UK police forces.

The seminar will address the vulnerability of watch and jewellery retailers to robberies, which continues to be a significant concern. During 2012, SaferGems recorded 122 robberies, including 12 attacks on travelling jewellery representatives. Of those reported offences, it is believed that approximately £15 million worth of goods were stolen, with high-end watches continuing to be the most sought after items with over £6 million worth stolen during robberies across the UK since September 2012. The organisation also reported that watches are the main target from smash and grab jewellery store raids.

The seminar will address will issues including the current trends in card fraud, key scams and tips for crime prevention, the work of SaferGems, the rise in the number of smash and grab crimes and how to identify stolen good.
