Piaget turns 2mm deep Altiplano prototype into a production model

Piaget has built the entire movement on a single plane and effectively made the dial, case and movement into an integrated timekeeping machine.

It was just a prototype when Piaget first unveiled its Altiplano Ultimate Concept in 2018, which it claimed would be the world’s thinnest mechanical watch.

Now the watch has been made for real.

Measuring just 2mm thick, the case forms part of the movement and is made from a cobalt-based alloy that is 2.3 times stronger than gold.

The mainspring barrel is a new design that has no cover or drum but is mounted on a single, ceramic ball-bearing and provides the watch with a power reserve of more than 40 hours.

To help with the process of keeping the watch as thin as possible, a special alligator skin strap  and a blue technical textile strap were developed, all of which are ultra-thin.
