Back to its roots: Piaget introduces new green Polo models

With the new green Polo Date and Skeleton models, an historic name and an on-trend colour combine to create a sporty-chic watch for the moment.

Beyond the headlines of the ultra-thin Altiplano Ultimate Concept, Piaget’s modern luxury sports line has often been something of a ‘sleeper’ watch. But it is hoped that a new name and a fresh look could bring it to the fore.

Created by Yves Piaget, the original Polo debuted in 1979 and united the brand’s expertise in goldsmithing and watchmaking. The name resurfaced in 2016 with the contemporary sports-luxe Polo S models. Earlier this year, the S was renamed the Polo Date, referencing the calendar window at 6 o’clock.

Green, in all its shades, has become one of the most ubiquitous colours in watchmaking, but Piaget was an early adopter of the colour. An originator of hardstone dials in the 1960s, the company frequently used jade, jasper, malachite and various green enamels in its sought-after cuff and bracelet watches.

In a deliberate nod to these early pieces, the latest Polo Date features a 42mm rose-gold case with 100m of water resistance and an exhibition caseback that gives a view of the 1110P calibre within. An emerald dial with louvre-pattern is matched with a green alligator-leather strap. The retail price is £24,300.

The 42mm steel Piaget Polo Skeleton features coloured bridges that bring a new depth to the industrial dial and the 1200S1 self-winding calibre. The boutique-only edition, priced at £25,000, is presented on a steel bracelet and provided with an interchangeable green alligator-leather strap.
