Pebble watch to begin shipping after 85,000 orders

Pebble, the smartwatch brand that used the Kickstarter crowdfunding scheme to help it launch, is set to begin shipping its first timepieces next week.

The company used Kickstarter to raise $10m (£6.2m) capital to get its digital watch brand off the ground. It is now due to ship its first 85,000 watches – fulfilling orders placed to date – from January 23.

The brand has forecast that it will take six to eight weeks to fulfil the initial orders, with Pebble watches then set to go on general sale.

The chief executive and founder of Pebble, Eric Migicovsky, announced the news last Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where a timepiece thought to be the world’s thinnest watch was also unveiled.

Pebble watches are smartwatches that sync with iPhone and Android smartphones to receive calendar updates, emails and texts, and show caller IDs. They can also control music devices, be used for sports timing and activities such as range finding for golfers, as well as being customisable through downloading apps.
