Patek Philippe names successor to its iconic Nautilus 5711

Patek Philippe has brought back its Nautilus with a blue dial, a successor to the 5711/1A-010 that it discontinued last year, but with one significant difference: this time it is made in white gold.

The added weight is not the only difference in the new Ref. 5811/1G-001 (the G stands for gold).

The watch is also slightly larger at 41mm compared to the 40mm diameter of the 5711.

Of course the price is also higher at £56,190 than the steel-on-steel Nautilus, which retailed for around £30,000 before it was discontinued.

But that is far lower than the secondary market price for the 5711, which is trading today at around £112,000, according to WatchCharts.com.

The 5811 case opens like a clam when unlocked with a patented locking mechanism on the crown side.

The white gold 5811 retains the sporty aesthetic first sketched by designer Gerald Genta in 1976 as the Nautilus 3700.

It will take a keen eye to see differences to the 5711, with the white metal framing an identical blue sunburst dial with black gradation and white gold hands and hour markers.

From the underside, the 5811 has an exhibition case back revealing the automatic 26-330 S C movement with an 18ct gold rotor.

The watch is water resistant to 120 metres.
