Patek Philippe and Rolex go toe-to-toe at Phillips Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIII

Patek Philippe and Rolex will slug it out on the block of from The Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIII by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo at the end of November.

In the blue corner is Patek Philippe with a platinum cased, sapphire set reference 3448 ‘The Blue Royale’ perpetual calendar.

In the red corner, dressed in black and gold, is a Rolex Daytona reference 6241 yellow gold chronograph wristwatch with “Paul Newman John Player Special” dial that has never previously been offered at auction.

To be fair, it is a bit of a mismatch.

The Patek Philippe perpetual calendar has a pre-sale bottom estimate of $1.3 million while the Rolex JPS chronograph could hammer for half that (estimate $596,000-$1,210,100)

The Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIII takes place from November 27 to 28 with bids accepted online.

There are over 300 lots from brands including Audemars Piguet, F.P. Journe, Harry Winston, and Gérald Genta.

Rolex John Player Special 6241

Rolex’s John Player Special 6241 chronograph was introduced in 1965 with a production spanning just for four years until 1969, placing it among the rarest Daytona models ever produced.

Fewer than 300 are thought to have been made in 18ct yellow gold.

Patek Philippe reference 3448 perpetual calendar

The Patek Philippe reference 3448 perpetual calendar from 1973 is the only example known with unique sapphire-set indexes, making it one of the most celebrated reference 3448 to be offered to the public.

It is also one of three known reference 3448 watches with a sapphire display caseback, possibly a result from the specific request from the original owner.
