Moritz Grossmann can trace its history back to the 19th century but, like all Glashutte watchmakers in East Germany, the company had its production diverted towards the war effort in World War II and then disappeared behind the iron curtain after the war, with the Soviet Union declaring its factory to be part of the state apparatus.
The Moritz Grossman name was revived in 2008, and has been making small quantities of high horology pieces every since.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary since its rebirth, a collection of unique pieces is being auctioned by Christie’s, and a roadshow to present the watches is touching down in Geneva (9-11 November), Hong Kong (23-25 November) and New York (30 November – 5 December).
Moritz Grossmann, the 19th century watchmaker, was instrumental in establishing the Glashutte School of Watchmakers on which the village’s current expertise is founded.
The 10th anniversary aims to highlight this history by including watches that require a diverse range of skills from its master watchmakers.
