It may just be a bit of housekeeping to protect any future developments, but Swatch Group has filed a trademark application to protect its MoonSwatches as downloadable virtual goods, works of art for use online and in online virtual worlds; and downloadable digital files authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The ‘pending’ application was filed on January 20 this year.
Companies routinely file for protection of their brands across an array of media, and using a long list of descriptions.
In this case, Swatch Group has also registered the MoonSwatch name to that nobody else can use it in connection with virtual goods ranging from watches and jewellery to clothing and even perfumes.
Once approved, the trademark would prevent any individual or company from creating virtual products for the Metaverse or any other online platform, from using the MoonSwatch name.
Swatch Group filed for the same protection for “Omega” and “Seamaster” on the same date.
