Apple’s new iPad operating system features a clock application that is indistinguishable from Mondaine’s classic watch face in all but name.
The iPad’s alarm clock features a face based on a copyrighted design first created for Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), a state-owned Swiss train operator, in 1955.
The design has since been licensed for use by Mondaine, but Apple has not been authorised to use it.
Christian Ginsig, a spokesperson for SBB, told Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger that they were happy that such a design classic was being so widely used, but added that the company is in contact with Apple about agreeing the rights to use it.
