Mondaine will take on its biggest timing job yet when it assumes timing responsibilities for the world’s longest railway tunnel later this year.
The 57km Gotthard Base Tunnel will open in June next year in Switzerland, providing a new rail link through the Alps, and as an official partner of the project, Mondaine will be setting the signal time for all rail transportation operating through the tunnel from December.
The AlpTransit Gotthard, Federal Office of Transport, the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways), Doris Leuthard from the Swiss Federal Council, main partners and guests from business and politics now start the official one year count down to the opening of the tunnel.
Mondaine owners, Ronnie and André Bernheim, said: “We are very proud of our partnership with such a world record breaking project. The tunnel is characterized in particular by innovation and high craftsmanship – qualities to which we also attach great importance in our watches.”
Mondaine will celebrate the tunnel partnership with a range of limited edition Gotthard Base Tunnel watch models, which will be shown for the first time at Baselworld 2016.
The Swiss watchmaker and SBB have very obvious links with many of Mondaine’s most famous watches using the design of the Swiss Federal Railways’ world famous clocks. When the Gotthard Base Tunnel opens in 2016, Mondaine and the SBB will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of this partnership.
