Miserable bank holiday weather kept a lid on a grand return to shopping last week, with footfall declining by 2% for the week of April 25 to May 2 for the entire UK.
That means the number of shoppers is still 26% lower than the same week in 2019 (comparisons to 2020 are misleading because the country was still in its first and hardest lock down), according to Springboard.
Cold and windy conditions were clearly the biggest issue because shopping centres and retail parks, where punters do not have to wander around outdoors, saw football increase by 2.8% and 1.6%, respectively, while high streets saw 6.1% fewer shoppers.
Scotland re-opened non-essential retail last week, causing week on week traffic to rise by 75%, but will be disappointed that footfall remains 26% below the level of the same week in 2019.
