Upcycled plastic at heart of new Maurice Lacroix release

The Aikon #tide uses a new composite material that consists of upcycled plastic and glass fibre.

Watch brand Maurice Lacroix has partnered with a Swiss company that specialises in upcycling plastic in the ocean to product a new member of its Aikon collection.

The ‘Aikon #tide’ comes in an array of distinctive and eye-catching colours and is aimed at watch lovers who are also environmentally conscious.

The bezel, case, case back, crown end-piece and buckle on the Aikon #tide are made from a new composite material that consists of upcycled plastic and glass fibre. Maurice Lacroix says that the material is five times more resistant than and twice as hard as standard plastic, with a much lower carbon footprint.

It comes with a screwed down crown and screwed caseback, helping the watch achieve water resistance of 100m. It also has the brand’s Easy Strap Exchange system, allowing the wearer to swap straps without tools.

The watch is powered by a quartz movement and comes with a 5-year warranty.

The launch of the Aikon #tide is the latest sign of Maurice Lacroix’s ongoing commitment to supporting environmental initiatives. It has made a commitment to saving 10 million plastic bottles from polluting the oceans. Among other things, this involves paying for longtail boats and warehouses, funding educational programmes and financing various types of equipment.

These bottles are sorted, shredded into flakes, washed and compacted close to the point of collection and then transported to #tide’s upcycling facilities where the flakes are compounded into smaller granules and then combined with an undisclosed formula, culminating in the creation of upcycled plastic which is eventually used in the Aikon #tide watches.

A second version of the Aikon #tide is due to be released later this year, equipped with a bracelet made of a similar composite material.
