Foils and watch

LuxeFoil: To infinity and beyond

When Felix Baumgartner stepped out of a shuttle to fall 39,045m at a top speed of 1,342.8km/h back to earth he did so wearing a Zenith, and suddenly the much-loved link between horology and space was given a modern connection.

This was aviation in the extreme, but soon a little piece of space travel could be making its way to Earth through new company LuxeFoil, an offshoot of Luxel, which for the past 35 years has been supplying outfits like Nasa with materials for space craft and is using the same materials to make watch dials.

The zirconium, silicon, boron and gold foils are supremely thin – 500 times thinner than a human hair – and superbly strong. The concept was only introduced to watchmakers at BaselWorld last month so watch this space.
