It is hard not to think of the earliest marine chronometers that helped sailors navigate the world in the 18th century when you look at Louis Vuitton’s trunk table clock.
The link is not a coincidence. Louis Vuitton is keen to tie world travel and horology together — two passions for the LVMH brand — in the form of this tailor-made trunk and dual time clock.
The steel clock, 80mm in diameter, is based on a Louis Vuitton Tambour Moon Dual Time with a double time-zone and a bright dial displaying colored flags.
“It takes inspiration from 18th century navy chronometers – indispensable, high-precision tools for long-distance navigators, allowing them to calculate longitude,” Louis Vuitton describes.
Louis Vuitton luggage began life around a century after the first marine chronometers in 1854 and is brought up to modern standards of luxury today with a Monogram Eclipse canvas on the outside. Its interior is lined in microfibre, reproducing the flags on the dial and the Louis Vuitton signature.
A counterweight makes the clock automatically turn towards the person opening the trunk.
