Jack Nicklaus’ famous gold Rolex to go under the hammer for children’s charity

If the record breaking Paul Newman Daytona was anything to go by, the Nicklaus Oyster Perpetual Day-Date could fetch millions.

Jack Nicklaus’ famous gold Rolex is set to go under the hammer to support the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, a charitable organisation that benefits the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami.

The Rolex is expected to fetch a large sum at auction after becoming famous in the golfing world as the watch the 18-time major winner always put on after a championship winning performance.

Nicklaus has been pictured on countless occasions donning the gold Day-Date model after victories and did so in every one since his win at the 1986 Masters.

The piece features a band and case of solid 18-karat gold, a champagne-coloured dial fitted with 18-karat hour markers all of which are tapered and faceted in a design evocative of golf tees.

It has a pie-pan-style face with a sweeping second hand, and it displays both day and date, with the day spelled out.

According to a report from Golf.com, since 2004 when Nicklaus and his wife founded the organisation it has raised over $100m.

If the record breaking Rolex Daytona once owned by Paul Newman piece is anything to go by, which sold for $17.8m, the sale of the Nicklaus watch could add even more to what the foundation has already raised.

The same Golf.com report went on to confirm that the watch will go under the hammer on December 10 at Phillips’ headquarters in Manhattan.

Phillips has also confirmed that it will donate its fee from the sale of the Nicklaus watch to Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.
