IN PICS: Piaget produces hybrid Emperador for SIHH

Piaget has released details of a limited edition hybrid mechanical/quartz watch to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the house’s first in-house quartz movement.

The Emperador Coussin XL 700P, limited to just 118 pieces, uses the same principle as Seiko’s famed Spring Drive system, namely a mechanical movement regulated by a quartz element. The watch features a dial-side micro rotor and a black ADLC-treated white gold bezel that appears to have the depth of a gemstone.  The 700P is a fairly startling development from a watch brand that continues to innovate and defy expectations.

Piaget also added to its versatile Limelight collection for ladies. The Stella introduces an astronomical moonphase complication with a large aperture at the 12 o’clock, following a current trend which is beginning to see watches from the likes of Christopher Ward and Arnold & Son, hand over more dial real estate than ever before to moonphase displays.

The standard, tiny apertures used for displaying moonphase do the complication no favours at all; it is the most visual of all complications but has, until now, been given no room to shine. The Limelight Stella addresses this issue with a window framed by a diamond-set sill reminiscent of the neckline of haute couture dress.
