HIGHLY COMMENDED: Showstopper of the Year, MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual

Having created the perpetual calendar movement once, you would think the watchmaking community would breathe a sigh of relief and use the same architecture in perpetuity.

Not MB&F, which went back to the drawing board to create a brand new in house movement controlled by what it calls a mechanical processor.

Most perpetual calendars, which are designed fundamentally for 31 day months, but have a mechanism to skip quickly to the 1st of a new month following a 28 or 30 day month.

The LM Perpetual goes the other way round, starting from a 28 day month and inserting extra days in the 11 longer months.

With such an innovative movement, you will want to see it in action, and this is possible through the open dial and the sapphire crystal back.

The face has hours and minutes nestled between the arches of the balance at 12 o’clock; day of the week at 3 o’clock, power reserve indicator at 4 o’clock, month at 6 o’clock, retrograde leap year indicator at 7 o’clock, and date at 9 o’clock.

Only 50 pieces have been produced so far, half in 18ct gold and half in platinum priced at CHF 181,500.
