H. Moser & Cie belts out total eclipse of a watch

Watchmaker has used its expertise in creating the blackest of blacks for its dials in an Endeavour Small Seconds timepiece designed to look like a total eclipse of the sun.

H. Moser & Cie has used its expertise in creating the blackest of blacks for its dials in an Endeavour Small Seconds watch designed to look like a total eclipse of the sun.

A dial coated in Vantablack is ringed by a bright inner bezel, in steel or red gold, that looks like the halo created as the sun is obscured by the moon and only its corona is still visible around the shadow.

Moser has created the Endeavour Small Seconds Total Eclipse in collaboration with The Armoury, a Hong Kong-based luxury menswear brand.

Edouard Meylan and Mark Cho.

Each reference (gold or steel inner bezel) is a 28-piece limited edition and will only be on sale in The Armoury stores in New York and Hong Kong, as well as on the e-commerce platforms for The Armoury and H. Moser.

The Armoury will be selling its stock of the watch using a lottery.

Customers have to place a refundable deposit to enter their name for the lottery before midnight on January 26.

Winners of the lottery will then be invited to pay the remaining balance for their watch in order to receive it.

“When [Moser CEO] Edouard Meylan and I first started talking about the idea of making a watch together, my main requirement was that it was small. I like watches that are discreet but reveal a deeper complexity if you pay them some attention,” recalls Mark Cho, co-founder of The Armoury.

“To me, H. Moser & Cie.’s fumé dial and Vantablack dial are iconic and I wanted to work with one of them as a starting point for the design. Quickly, I started to favour the Vantablack and I had the idea to add markings to the dial somehow. My design partner: Elliot Hammer, suggested that we imagine the design with the theme of a total solar eclipse. Thus, the Endeavour Small Seconds Total Eclipse was born’,” he explains.

Mr Meylan says his team collaborated with The Armoury to create the epitome of classic savoir faire in a timepiece.

“Absolutely everything in this model links back to this quest for ultimate elegance, combining classicism with a contemporary feel,” he suggests.

“It’s 38mm diameter is perfectly balanced. We opted for the smallest and finest of our movements, the hand-wound HMC 327 calibre, with an offset small second at 6 o’clock, reminiscent of the pocket-watch style.”

The Endeavour Small Seconds Total Eclipse comes in a 38mm steel case and is worn on a black calf leather strap.
