Google adds wi-fi connectivity to Android Wear

Google has added wi-fi connectivity to Andoid Wear as part of a comprehensive upgrade to its smartwatch operating system.

New features also include the ability to draw emojis on the watch screen, hands-free control of several functions and always-on apps that don’t disappear from the screen.

Each of the four new functions appears designed to stay one step ahead of Apple Watch’s operating system, which offers none of them.

The LG Watch is expected to be the first commercially available smartwatch to use the new operating system.

Wi-fi connectivity is likely to be the most significant improvement. Smartphones will still need to be tethered to a phone to use most apps, but synching can now take place with devices continents apart as long as they are both connected to the internet.

Hands-free features include allowing a user to scroll through menus with a flick of their wrists.
