Flag drops on hotrod-inspired Shinola automatic chronograph

Shinola has distilled the essence of vintage American hotrods into its very first automatic chronograph wristwatch.

Shinola has all-but given up on the UK market for now, which is a shame because its latest collection is tailor-made for this market.

The American watchmaker has distilled the essence of vintage hotrods into its very first automatic chronograph wristwatch.

The Shinola Canfield Speedway houses a Selitta SW 550 movement in a rounded and polished stainless steel case.

In true hotrod style, the movement has been souped up with a checkered flag rotor that can be seen through a clear crystal case back.

There is a vintage dashboard vibe to the watch’s black dial as well, with a tachymeter inner bezel converting elapsed time into speed and sub dials adopting the punchy red and yellow colors often found on rev counters and other gauges from the earliest days of racing.

“The watch is about the colorful and courageous origins of American stock car racing – like when Daytona Beach actually happened on the beach,” says Greg Verras, Shinola’s watch design director.

“We were in search for the spirit of the craftsmen and mechanics that pushed their creative limits and brought people together with the beauty and excitement of their work.”

Shinola’s Canfield Speedway can be pre-ordered from today for $2,995 and goes on general sale on May 20 in Shinola stores.
