The final figures are in for a record year for the Swiss watch industry with exports in December rising by 5.8% compared to the same month in 2021 and full year exports rising by 11.4% to CHF 24.8 billion.

That is a jump of CHF 2.5 billion for Switzerland’s watch manufacturers, even though the total number of watches produced and exported was unchanged at 15 million units.

Growth was powered by an exceptional year in the United States, which built on momentum in 2021 to account for annual growth in Swiss watch exports of 26.3%.

Exports to the United States have almost doubled (up 95%) since 2020 to a value of CHF 3.9 billion, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH).

Europe was another strong performer with the UK (+21.5% in 2022), Germany (+21.7%) and France (+21.4%) all in the top ten largest export markets.

Strength in Western markets more than offset another year of declines for mainland China (-13.6%) and Hong Kong (-10.5%). They remain second and third in the league table of largest markets for Swiss watch exports.
