eBay diligence helps catch military watch thief

A British Royal Navy sailor has been jailed for stealing dive watches made for Special Boat Service commandos and selling them online.

A British Royal Navy sailor has been jailed for stealing dive watches made for Special Boat Service commandos and selling them online.

Able Seaman Joshua Cheetham’s crime came to light after customers questioned the authenticity of watches he had listed for sale on eBay.

Officials at the online marketplace notified the Ministry of Defense about the watches, which led to a search of Mr Cheetham’s home where one of the watches was discovered.

In court it was revealed that he had sold six of the Cabot Watch Company (CWC) SBS divers’ watches for around £1,650.

The ultra tough watches, built for elite units of the British Forces such as the Royal Marines & Special Boat Service, are water resistant to 300 meters and can be bought new online for around £600.

eBay has rolled out a number of initiatives to ensure watches sold on its platform are genuine and as described.

The CWC watches would not have been caught by eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee service because it only checks pieces priced at over $2,000.

However, heightened vigilance may have helped catch this wayward sailor.

Mr Cheetham was fired from the Navy and jailed for three months.
