De Bethune heads into space on the wrist of Michael Strahan

Retired American football star and Good Morning America anchor Michael Strahan is heading into space tomorrow aboard Blue Origin’s third flight with passengers, and among the personal items he is taking is a prized De Bethune DB28 Kind of Blue timepiece.

The all blue watch is decorated with an arrowhead shape on its dial that could easily be confused for a Star Trek motif as seen on the uniform of Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, a previous passenger on Blue Origin.

Mr Strahan is given just a 3 lb allowance for personal items on his brief trip into space, so he had to choose carefully.

He told US media that he is taking 12 shell casings from the 12-gun salute performed at his father Gene’s funeral, his Super Bowl XLII Ring, his Pro Football Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence and two watches: a pocket watch that belonged to his maternal grandfather and a the De Bethune DB28 Kind of Blue.

The watch is a limited edition of just five pieces.

Its blued titanium dial is decorated with a golden depiction of the Milky Way, which Mr Strahan should be able to see as he leaves earth’s atmosphere.
