My brother used to brag that he discovered Joy Division.
Being two years’ older than me, he had a more mature ear when it came to Ian Curtis’s 1970s cult rock act as we transitioned from primary to secondary school.
His talent spotting elicited more awe in me than, with hindsight, it deserved, but I still respect his passion for indies in the music business and the religious zeal with which he listened to the John Peel sessions on Radio 1.
Every industry has its indies, and the watch business is no different. They come in many guises: you could call Rolex, AP and Patek Philippe independents because they are privately-owned.
We most commonly refer to artisan watchmakers, hand-crafting a few hundred pieces per year, as indies.
In the case of WATCHPRO Market, we are bringing together indies that have launched their own businesses and design their own watches.
WATCHPRO Market, which opens tomorrow at The Truman Brewery in London’s Shoreditch, is hugely important to these indies.
They are mainly digital native brands that are rarely or never seen in physical stores, which means customers usually have to buy their watches sight-unseen.
WATCHPRO Market, housed within the former industrial site of Truman Brewery, is open to everybody.
We have taken the show to the people by locating it in one of the highest footfall areas of East London, home to the capital’s best street food and markets specialising in vintage, vinyl, fashion, arts and crafts.
In most cases, because WATCHPRO Market exhibitors are young, fresh, design-led watchmakers, the stalls will be staffed by the very people who created their own watches.
The emphasis is on creating a joyful journey of learning at WATCHPRO Market. Cocktails and coffee will be served, watchmakers are primed to meet the public and everybody is encouraged to drop in to try on watches from some wonderful entrepreneurs.
The WATCHPRO team will also be there to share our passion for the watches on show and we cannot wait to meet you all there.
And, who knows, you might just discover the next Joy Division of the watchmaking world.
