Chopard resurrects Ferdinand Berthoud watchmaking

Chopard Group is honouring the work of historic horologist Ferdinand Berthoud with the creation of a luxury brand in his name.

Berthoud was born in Switzerland in 1727 and became a Master Clockmaker in 1753 while working in Paris as Horologist-Mechanic by appointment to the King and the Navy for France, most notably creating marine chronometers that helped the nation navigate at sea.

Chopard has established the company, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, in Fleurier, Switzerland, and unveiled its first timepiece with the same name.

The Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1 timepiece aims to present a modern vision of the creations that Berthoud might create if he were still living today, the company says.

Housed in an imposing octagonal case, the watch is equipped with an original mechanical hand-wound movement comprising more than 1,120 components.

It was entirely conceived, developed and produced inhouse by the atelier, inclusing the FB-T.FC calibre, which features a tourbillon with central seconds, a distinctive pillar-type architecture, a suspended fusée – chain regulating system and a mobile cone indicating power-reserve.

The FB 1 will be available in a limited series of 50 timepieces in 18ct white gold and titanium and a further 50 pieces in 18ct rose gold and black ceramic.
