Chopard leaps towards the future with Mille Miglia Lab One concept watch

Only 20 are being made, and the aim is to demonstrate mastery of a number of new materials and techniques at Chopard’s R&D lab.

In addition to two new chronographs, which will be the official partner watches of this year’s Mille Miglia vintage car rally in Italy, Chopard has also used the occasion to stretch its watchmaking muscles by creating a new self-winding tourbillon movement that will be housed in a futuristic case as the Mille Miglia Lab One concept watch.

Only 20 are being made, and the aim is to demonstrate mastery of a number of new materials and techniques at Chopard’s R&D lab.

The racy, ultra-light, watch comes in a contemporary blackened titanium cushion-shaped case containing the new Chopard 04.03-M automatic tourbillon movement.

Its dial is an open-worked grid reminiscent of a racing car radiator grille, while the movement echoes the cylinder head topping the dial and housing a large double-disc date display, Chopard describes.

This “engine bonnet” is flanked by two lateral gauges. The autonomy indicator sits between 7 and 8 o’clock. When Full, the ‘petrol tank’ of the Mille Miglia Lab One delivers a 60-hour power reserve. Between 4 and 5 o’clock, a retrograde day indicator is a novel feature for Chopard.

It comes on a strap made from woven carbon fibres on top and rubber underneath.

Mille Miglia Lab One goes on sale for CHF 129,000.
