Cartier plots growth of 10 boutiques a year

Cartier is planning to expand its retail empire by 10 stores a year, according to president and chief executive Bernard Fornas in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

The luxury watch and jewellery house currently has 305 boutiques around the world.

Fornas spoke about this steady expansion plan when asked whether the economic climate had affected Cartier’s growth plans.

42 of Cartier’s boutiques are located in mainland China and, as with the majority of luxury brands, the region is a key focus for Cartier.

Fornas said: “You might have a slowdown there, but there are so many cities where we have not scratched the potential yet. I see continued growth in China, and think the business should continue to be quite acceptable in the region. China is our third- or fourth-biggest market, but the Chinese nationality is number one because of the customers who buy products when they travel.”
