BRITISH DESIGNED WATCHES OF THE YEAR: Loomes & Co The Everest

The watch was worn by a team of Gurkhas attempting to conquer the mountain in 2015 when a massive earthquake struck, forcing the team to halt their attempt so they could help rescue other climbers.

Unusually for the Watches of the Year report, the Loomes timepiece we have chosen is not new.

However, its remarkable story, which stretches back to tragic events on Mount Everest in 2015 continue to this day with a Loomes Everest timepiece being auctioned to raise money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The watch was being worn by a team of Gurkhas attempting to conquer the mountain three years ago when a massive earthquake struck, forcing the team to halt their attempt so they could help rescue other climbers.

The same watch made it to the summit two years later when the Gurkha team tried gain in 2017, and was auctioned by Bonhams earlier this year to raise money for the GWT.

The hammer finally dropped on the sale of the watch with a bid of £10,000, with the auction winner acquiring a piece of horological and mountaineering history while contributing to a fantastic and supportive charity.
