Breitling marks 50 years of timekeeping in space

50 years ago today, on May 24th 1962, a Breitling Navitimer chronograph became the first wrist chronograph to orbit the earth.

The timepiece was worn by American Lt Commander Scott Carpenter as he orbited the Earth three times aboard the Aurora 7 capsule.

To celebrate the anniversary, Breitling has released a limited edition Navitimer Cosmonaute equipped with a high performance Manufacture Breitling movement, entirely developed and produced in the company workshops. Only 1,962 pieces will be made.

The anniversary edition Cosmonautte has a 24-hour display and manual winding mode – two nods to the original 1962 chronograph – as well as the Aurora 7 mission insignia engraved on the caseback.

Enthusiasts can log in to a live web cast from New York that will celebrate the anniversary at 2pm, UK-time, today, at Breitling.com.
