Breitling doffs its cap the dearly departing Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet

Few brands are as tightly associated with the golden age of jet travel as Breitling, with its Navitimer gracing the wrists of pilots since intercontinental flying became possible for a typical family thanks, in part, to the growing size and range of iconic aircraft like the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet.

The 747 first took to the skies in 1969, capable of carrying twice as many passengers as any other plane at the time, and with a range of 5,000 miles that brought the whole of American into range with most of Europe.

Boeing has been winding down production of the 747 for many years, and the final plane rolled off the production line in December last year after a 54-year production run and 1,574 aircraft built.

Breitling is marking the end of this particular era with a special edition Navitimer, limited to 747 pieces, and using the colour combination used for the very first Jumbo: a cream dial with black subdials and red-and-white slide rule with blue accents.

The Boeing 747 name is depicted on the watch’s slide rule inner scale.

“What better way to remember a revolutionary jumbo jet than with a revolutionary pilot’s chronograph,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “The Boeing 747 brought style to the skies, just as the Navitimer brought the spirit of aviation to style-savvy watch enthusiasts.”

The 43mm steel watch has an exhibition case back exposing the COSC-certified Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 movement, which has 70 hour power reserve.

It is on sale now for £7,300 on a black alligator leather strap or £7,500 on a steel bracelet.
