Braun showcases timepieces to commemorate artwork installation

Watch manufacturer Braun has showcased its BN0021 and ‘Classic slim’ watches at a celebratory dinner event at the Tower Bridge Walkway venue to commemorate Braun’s involvement in the London Design Festival.

Braun has collaborated with design studio Layer to commission an installation – The Foil – for the London Design Festival 2016.

The company said the intention of the installation is to illustrate how the enduring design principles, originating with the likes of Dieter Rams are still in place today and applied to Braun’s products.

The Foil installation was designed to showcase the performance engineering, materiality and movement of Braun’s products. A 20-metre-long undulating ribbon comprising 50,000 individual metallic elements runs down the entire length of the Tapestry Gallery.

The ribbon moves continuously and dynamically in a sine wave formation, reflecting and scattering light around the gallery. The shape of the 50,000 mirrored metallic elements is informed by the precision engineered shape of the Braun shaver foil, and the movement is inspired by the 360-degree movement of the Braun shaver head, the company said.

Oliver Grabes, global design director at Braun, said: “Good design bringing functionality, quality and simplicity together is what Braun is about. To create better products with less, leaving decoration off and focusing on what is truly needed. The installation in the V&A is celebrating the simplicity of focusing on one part, one material which can create amazing experiences.”

Benjamin Hubert, director at Layer Design said: “Together with the Braun design team we saw an opportunity to create a large-scale installation for the London Design Festival at the V&A to communicate the brand’s commitment to design and deliver an engaging and meaningful experience to a wide audience that embodies the values of excellence, engineering and quality that are imbued in every Braun product.”
