Bovet develops unique timepieces for Rolls-Royce Boat Tail customers

Bovet has landed the chance to create completely bespoke timepieces for the dashboard of the Boat Tail car that can be removed and used as either a desk clock or a wristwatch.

Rolls-Royce’s Boat Tail customisation conjures up images of old money Chelsea folk rocking up to a polo tournament with the luxury of knowing that their Bollinger is being kept cool and the crystal glassware will not be damaged.

The Boat Tail car has its usual boot replaced with what Rolls-Royce calls an aft deck made from grey and black Caleidolegno veneers divided by steel inlays to emulate marine planking.

It opens like a musical box to reveal its hidden secrets that are mainly devoted to serving high end picnics from a perfectly chilled champagne fridge.

Bovet has landed the chance to create completely bespoke timepieces for the dashboard of the Boat Tail car that can be removed and used as either a desk clock or a wristwatch.

As locations for promotions go, the dashboard of a coach-built Rolls-Royce dashboard is prime real estate for a prestige marque like Bovet, and the brand is taking full advantage with some striking designs that can be customised for individual tastes.

There are two tourbillon timepieces that have been engineered, designed, and developed in parallel with the production of the coach-built Rolls- Royce.

The watch and the system to mount the timepiece in the dashboard is said to have taken three years’ of development by the two businesses.

No other timepiece has ever undergone such scrutiny and testing – up to and including crash tests, Bovet says.

“As a long-time Rolls-Royce owner and lover, I am particularly pleased to have an opportunity to work on such a special bespoke project,” explains Pascal Raffy, owner, Bovet.

“The engineers, designers, watchmakers, and artisans at Bovet went above and beyond to personalise these exceptional timepieces for the clients, integrating their wishes and key elements of the coach-built car itself, and even realising one-off movements. On top of this, both of the timepieces are able to be placed into a display mount designed specifically for this purpose, effectively making them part of the car and subject to the norms of automobile production standards,” he adds.

“Rolls-Royce Boat Tail challenges the notion of what a motor car is and creates a new definition of what a motor car means,” says Alex Innes, Head of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Design, Rolls-Royce.

“Boat Tail exists far beyond a mere means of transport. It is not just the method to reach a destination, but the destination itself. It is a concept of extraordinary scope, resulting in a work of art of historical significance.”
