Bonhams watch auctions triple in value as pre-owned market “explodes”

The market for luxury pre-owned and vintage watches has exploded over recent years, according to Jonathan Darracott, global head of watches at Bonhams.

Ahead of the auction house’s major Bond Street sale this month, Mr Darracott told WatchPro that all six auctions held by Bonhams each year are booming. “The market is exploding,” he told a gathering of journalists in London yesterday.

The Bond Street Fine Watches and Wristwatches sales, which take place twice per year, are used to sell the most rare and prestigious watches. The sale on June 20 has two Rolex Cosmograph Daytona pieces that could collectively sell for over £500,000.

A Rolex Daytona ‘Oyster Sotto’, one of only 20 or fewer known examples where the word Oyster appears below Rolex and Cosmograph, has a pre-sale estimate of £300,000 to £400,000.

Bonhams’ Knightsbridge auctions, which take place four times per year and specialise in watches in the £500 to £5000 price bracket, are growing even faster.

Penny Morris, head of watch department for Bonhams Knightsbridge says that the value of each auction has tripled in the seven years since she joined the business.
