Ballast emerges with new patented system feature for watch

Ballast, whose timepieces are inspired by naval history, has announced the launch of its new Trafalgar BL-3133 timepiece, which features a patented bezel control system – the watch’s standout feature, according to the manufacturer.

It said that the bezel system is used to wind the mainspring of the automatic movement and to set the time and date. According to Ballast, the “bezel geared” mechanism is a novel retro inspired innovative detail for the Trafalgar.

Ballast said operating the bezel is straightforward but “ingenious”. After removing the canteen crown, a setter needs to be pressed and thereafter the bezel is engaged. Turning the bezel either direction moves the date wheel, which is visible through the dial. Pushing the setter all the way down activated the hour and minute hands.

It claimed this entire process is an interesting feature and eradicates any fiddling on the crown to pull out, especially on canteen crown type watches where the crown can be annoyingly small and requires perfect nails to lift off the case, Ballast said.

The Trafalgar is powered by the Miyota 8215, 21 Jewel Automatic caliber. Ballast insisted the Miyotas are utterly reliable and a sensible choice. This movement beats at 21,600 vph and provides a power reserve of over 50 hours with an accuracy of -20/+40 seconds per day, it is claimed. The movement is visible via the transparent exhibition case which has the Ballast “B” logo etched onto the underside of the lens.

The case’s canteen lock is made of 10 separate pieces that are plated and add extra protection for the setter button, Ballast said. It added that the piece features a testament the Royal Navy on left side of the watch, where the motto of the submarine service, “We come unseen,“ is affixed by screws.

According to Ballast, the leather strap is robust, supple, hand painted and tanned in Italy with a sturdy cross stitch pattern to it. The submarine silhouette buckle comes as standard. While the strap is affixed for a strong snug fit, it is also easily removed by a self-removable spring bar for versatility and future customisation, the watchmaker said.
