ASK THE EXPERT: Fellows director Adrian Hailwood describes the importance of the Speedmaster

Originally designed as a motor racing chronograph, hence the name, the Speedmaster also found favour with engineers, and pilots.

Famously worn on the wrists of test-pilots as they transitioned to become astronauts, the Speedmaster was well placed to be the first watch worn on the moon.

The decision to move the tachymeter scale out onto the bezel created a clear legible dial that was as aesthetically pleasing as it was practical; this coupled with the renowned Lemania Calibre 321 produced an unbeatable ‘tool’ chronograph.

While the core model has changed very little up to the present day’ the Speedmaster line has spawned countless line extension s from the ‘Mk series’ of 1969 – 1984 to the likes of the more recent ‘Dark side of the Moon’ proving the versatility and enduring appeal of this model.”
