Alpina adds a quartz option to its sporty Alpiner family

Steel sports models will retail for £650 to £750 when they hit shops in the UK.

Quartz movements are ideal for sports watches. They are typically less expensive, more accurate and more resistant to shocks than equivalent mechanical timekeepers.

Small wonder then that Alpina, the Swiss watchmaker acquired by Citizen Watch Company a couple of years ago, has added a quartz option to its Alpiner collection.

Alpina made its first sports watches in the pre-quartz 1930s, but the current Alpiner’s design — until now made only with mechanical movements — borrows more from automatics launched by the brand in the 1950s.

The 2019 Alpiner Quartz, which retails for £650 with a leather strap and £750 with a steel bracelet, shares the same design aesthetics as its mechanical siblings, but uses the AL-240 quartz movement to drive its display of hours, minutes, seconds and date.

Its design is bang on trend for people that want the same watch for the office and outdoors, coming in a wearable 42mm steel case that is water resistant to 330 feet.

The collection comes with a choice of dark grey, silver or glacier blue dials with a sunray finish.
