WOTY 2012: Innovation – TAG Heuer Mikrogirder

Earlier this year WatchPro unveiled its Watches of the Year 2012 – the 10 winning timepieces and 90 highly commended watches that we felt boasted commercial appeal, innovation and had wowed consumers and retailers alike over the past 12 months.

Now we are showcasing a watch a day that made the cut in 2012. Today we’ve reached a new category, counting down our Most Innovative watches of the year, continuing today with this speedy little number from TAG.

Highly Commended Innovative Watch of the Year – TAG Heuer Mikrogirder

The Mikorgirder is TAG Heuer’s most innovative creation to date, precisely able to measure time to a phenomenal 5/10,000th of a second.

It beats at 1,000 Hz and features the fastest mechanical regulator ever crafted and tested, with dual girders that work with a linear oscillator – versus the spiral shape in a classic hairspring – that vibrates with the same frequency at a very slight angle.

The angle means there is no loss of amplitude and thus the movement’s precision is significantly increased. At present 10 patents are pending on the Mikrogirder while the case design references the brand’s classical stopwatches of the 1920s, placing the crown at 12 o’clock.

The dial allows the wearer to see the girder at work through a cut out at the centre and, like most of TAG Heuer’s other concept watches, the Mikrogirder is very well likely to become a fully realised commercial timepiece in the future.
