Under the Gavel: Alfred Dunhill Watch Lighter

This pocket-sized marvel by Alfred Dunhill was part of the September timepiece auction at Watches of Knightsbridge in London. It caught our eye for its elegance, slick manufacture and functionality.

Time-telling Alfred Dunhill lighters are not the most common of objects to find at auction, and its final hammer price was a smoking £3,750. It is made in 18ct gold and bears hallmarks dating back to 1928. The surface features an engine-turned pattern and the piece is numbered 162. It also fits snughly in the palm of your hand, measuring just under 5cm wide,

This quirky little object – dubbed a star lot in the post-auction results – was also sold with an old Dunhill box.
