Tiffany reasserts itself in the luxury watch world

Tiffany is hoping to shine again in the watch world with the launch of a range of styles under the banner of the CT60 collection.

The watches went on sale this month at Tiffany stores world-wide.

Tiffany can trace its horological history back to 1853 when the company’s founder Charles Lewis Tiffany unveiled a nine-foot Atlas clock above his store. The same clock is still mounted above the entrance of the company’s New York flagship on Fifth Avenue.

Legend has it that Mr. Tiffany first coined the term a New York minute at the time, and the company positioned itself at the heart of American watch and clock making for decades.

Tiffany’s recent history is more mixed.

Tiffany and Swatch Group launched a watch-making partnership in 2007, but the relationship ended acrimoniously in 2011, and led to the two companies launching multiple lawsuits against each other.

The suits were finally settled last year with Tiffany paying Swatch CHF402 million, and just two months later Tiffany a Swiss watch-making subsidiary.

The first collection of that subsidiary, CT60, includes pieces for men and women built around self-winding mechanical chronograph movements.

Models are available in stainless steel and gold.

One of the most iconic pieces is an 18 karat rose gold calendar watch with a 42-hour power reserve, shock-absorption system and sapphire crystal display back is created in a limited edition of 60, each numbered on the case back.

Other timepieces include a 3-hand timepiece in 18 karat rose gold with gold poudré numerals and diamond bezel.

Prices in the US range upwards from $4,250.
