The Selection: Jaquet Droz

It’s not every day that we come across a watch featuring a cherub riding in a carriage pulled by a butterfly and we could never have imagined that, when we did, it would be quite so captivating.

A one off, The Loving Butterfly was created by Jaquet Droz for this year’s Only Watch charity auction and the delicate scene harks back to the Enlightenment period of architecture and botany. The butterfly signifies the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods, and also symbolises beauty and freedom. In the background, the Palace of Monaco has been painted. The watch has a 43mm diameter yellow gold case and an exposed oscillating weight. The butterfly’s gold wire legs are suspended and wave slightly with each wrist movement and it is this attention to detail that has us all of a flutter.
