Tales from the Golden Triangle – How Harrington & Hallworth conquered the Premier League

Wilmslow and the neighbouring towns of Alderley Edge and Prestbury are known in the area as the Golden Triangle. You could drive through the town and not realise it, but a single street in Prestbury has average house prices of £1.5 million. The area certainly benefits from the collective wealth of Premiership footballers, but there is plenty of old money about as well.

“I would say that here more than half of the people in Wilmslow are our customers. They are good customers, repeat customers. We have been here for so long now that I may not see a customer for 2-3 years, but when they walk through the door they will still see me. I will know what they have bought from me before,” Mr Harrington describes.

“This is a very broad, wealthy client base. In most places, a jeweller of my standard might say that 2% of their local population can shop with them. But I say that 50% of the population of Wilmslow can shop with me,” he adds.

Harrington & Hallworth is not alone in selling top end timepieces to Golden Triangle residents. Incredibly for such a small town, Wilmslow has three luxury jewellers selling top end Swiss watches.

Prestons is just around the corner, a massive agent for Rolex, Tudor and Patek Philippe. Mark Worthington is a specialist in vintage watches, and is also an authorised retailer for Breitling. “Between my two shops – Harrington & Hallworth and Alfred Peter – I have nearly every other watch brand,” Mr Harrington says.

That is not quite true. In fact, there are brands that Mr Harrington is desperate to start selling but have not quite been convinced to come on board yet. That is where his next big venture, a brand new luxury boutique in the centre of Manchester comes in. The shop will be on King Street, which is already home to Boodles, and Hancocks.

Harrington & Hallworth is taking over the current unit used by Boodles, which is moving to a larger corner site. The new Harrington & Hallworth will sell only three luxury watch brands; only one of which is from its current portfolio, Mr Harrington reveals. The names of the other two brands remain a secret at this stage, but negotiations are well advanced, he assures WatchPro.
