Society dials in on vintage wristwatches

Increasing interest in vintage watches has in recent years permeated auction houses, retail and social media and now the Antiquarian Horological Society has finally taken note.

At the society’s annual general meeting, held at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich last weekend, the decision was taken to found a Wristwatch Group, which will join its existing Electrical Horology and Turret Clock groups.

The meeting was seen as a ‘new era’ for the society which introduced its newly appointed chairman Dr James Nye and featured presentations from the Royal Observatory’s Rory McEvoy and AHS vice-chair Jonathan Betts MBE along with new president Prof Lisa Jardine CBE FRS.

Dr Nye said: “There has been an increased interest in vintage and antique wristwatches in recent years, but a perceived lack of corresponding published scholarly research. The Wristwatch Group plans to promote and encourage the study of the history and development of wristwatches, through meetings, education and publications, including articles in the Journal or technical papers for Group members.”

Members of the AHS have the opportunity to gain behind the scenes access to museums and workshops and invitations to specialist seminars, along with the Society’s London lecture series and quarterly peer-reviewed journal, Antiquarian Horology, which is fully digitalised.
