Seiko returns to enamel dials following successful 2016 experiment

Seiko is expanding its range of enamel dialed watches following a successful experiment with the material last year.

A limited edition of Seiko Presage watches with enamel dials was introduced at Baselworld in 2016. At this year’s show, the company will launch a full collection, with each watch using Seiko’s mechanical calibers.

The watches will be available worldwide in September.

There are four models using three different calibers. All draw their design inspiration from two landmark Seiko creations. First, the 1913 Laurel, which was Seiko’s and Japan’s first ever wrist watch and which had an enamel dial.

Second, the roman numeral hour markers are the direct descendants of the markers on the dial of Seiko’s 1895 pocket watch, the Time Keeper.

Seiko history

The enamel dials are made by the master craftsman Mitsuru Yokozawa and his team. The hour markers are painted ten times to lift them in relief from the dial.

The tips of the hands are curved to follow the contours of the curved sapphire crystals so that the case depth is minimised. The exhibition case backs are sapphire crystal.
