Samsung unveils world’s first 3G smartwatch

Samsung has unveiled a smartwatch with its own 3G connection, creating the world’s first smart wearable device that does not rely on a phone for data connectivity.

The smartly curved Samsung Gear S represents the next generation of smartwatches, devices that had previously relied on being tethered to a mobile phone in order to access data.

JK Shin, chief executive officer and head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics, said: “Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation. The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime.”

The device’s functions are viewed and accessed through a curved 2in Super AMOLED display and flexible band that mould neatly to the wearer’s wrist.

As well as 3G, the Gear S features Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity as well as an onscreen keyboard and voice commands. The smartwatch also acts as a phone, allowing the wearer to make and receive calls directly from their wrist.

The Gear S includes turn-by-turn pedestrian navigation courtesy of HERE, rolling news from the Financial Times as well as providing access to social media feeds, calendar events, messaging and health and fitness monitoring.
