Richard Mille perfects challenge of studding diamonds into ceramic

Richard Mille is building on its mastery of gem-setting into carbon with the ladies RM 07-01 Black Ceramic featuring diamond-studded ceramic.

The technique, which was previously thought impossible, has led to a watch of unique technicality and beauty.

“After our work on setting gems in Carbon TPT, we wanted to extend this innovative setting technique to new materials,” says Cécile Guenat, technical director for jewellery-making at Richard Mille.

“We naturally gravitated to ceramic, because it had never been done before,” he adds.

Ceramic has an extremely fine grain, and Richard Mille has given it a matte finish using milling and micro-shot peening.

Red gold 0.25mm prongs are then embedded that hold fast the diamonds placed by the gem-setter leading to a velvet black case from which the diamonds shine.
